RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This research has been conducted to determine the effect of music on pain and anxiety levels of patients receiving chemotherapy during COVID-19. METHODS: The research has been carried out in a real trial model with 92 adult patients (45 in the experimental group who received chemotherapy and 47 in the control group). The data have been collected by the researcher with Google Forms (using State and Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI] and visual analogue scale [VAS]) through the links sent to the phones of participants on the day they received chemotherapy, between March 2020 and July 2020. RESULTS: The mean scores obtained from the post-test STAI (53.11 ± 4.77) and VAS (3.44 ± 2.53) in the experimental group have been determined to statistically significantly decrease when compared to the pre-test measurement data (STAI: 54.26 ± 4.26; VAS: 4.22 ± 2.41) (p < 0.05). No statistically significant difference has been determined between pre-test and post-test mean scores of the patients in the control group. CONCLUSION: It has been observed that music applications reduce the pain and anxiety levels of patients receiving chemotherapy during the COVID-19 process. It can be recommended to use music applications in the management of pain and anxiety symptoms.

RESUMO

The aim of the study is to determine the psychological well-being of patients who underwent stem cell transplantation. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 patients. Data were collected face-to-face using an introductory information form and the Brief Symptom Inventory. When the results of the patients were examined, the interpersonal sensitivity of the sub-dimensions of the scale was found to be 5.0 ± 4.06, depression 7.60 ± 5.37, and anxiety disorder 7.90 ± 5.34. There was a significant difference between the diagnosistime of the patients and all sub-factors of the scale, except phobic anxiety. It was found that the psychological state of the patients was directly related to the time of first diagnosis. As a result, the importance of following the psychological processof the patients during the treatment process was revealed when planning nursing care.

RESUMO

This study aims to determine the effect on depression of elderly people's anxiety levels in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a descriptive study, in which data were collected using the online survey method, an introductory information form, a semistructured data form for COVID-19, the Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Data were collected during the period when a curfew was imposed for the elderly. Data were analyzed using a structural equation model. According to the structural equation model, anxiety was determined as a predictor of depression. The anxiety levels of the elderly who were 65-74 years old, female, single; had insufficient knowledge about the pandemic; and had not encountered a similar outbreak before considered that family relationships were affected negatively so they became lonely and reported that they became bored, exhausted, and distressed during the pandemic, which increased their depression levels. Anxiety affects depression in the elderly. Therefore, it is recommended to provide them with appropriate psychological support interventions and understandable information about the pandemic so that their anxiety and depression levels can be reduced during the pandemic.

RESUMO

This study aimed to determine how counseling based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and supported with motivational interviewing (MIs) affected functional recovery in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (IDSs). A quasi-experimental design was used. The participants of this study were 87 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (36 in the experimental group and 51 in the control group). The experimental group received counseling based on ACT and supported with MIs. The data were collected between September 2018 and May 2019 using a Descriptive Information Form and the Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia Scale (FROGS). The participants in the experimental group were given a group counseling program of eight sessions at community mental health centers in downtown Malatya, Turkey. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in the mean scores on FROGS between those in the IDS experimental group and those in the control group. The scores increased on both groups.

RESUMO

The aim of this research is to find the effect of mindfulness-based education given to individuals with substance-use disorder according to self-efficacy theory on self-efficacy perception. The research was planned as a test model with pretest-posttest control groups. Individuals who have been diagnosed with substance abuse in the substance abuse clinic of Turgut Ozal Medical Center, and at the Substance Abuse Treatment and Education Centre of Gaziantep 25 Aralik State Hospital formed the core of this study. The research was conducted between January 2018-May 2019. 112 patients, 56 in the treatment and 56 in the control group, participated in the study. Scientific research started after ethical approval. Mindfulness therapy was applied to experimental group patients. For the data collection, the Socio-Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire and Self-Efficacy-Sufficiency scale were used. t-Test for dependent variables to compare the mean scores of experimental and control groups and t-test for independent variables were used. It was seen that the average total Self-Efficacy-Sufficiency score of the patients in the treatment group was 76.50 ± 12.62 before the intervention and increased to 85.50 ± 14.95 after the intervention. There is a significant difference between the average scores. Even when the treatment and control groups are compared, a significant difference was still detected between the groups. There was no significant difference between the groups in two of the Self-Efficacy-Sufficiency steps after the intervention in the experimental group, but there were significant differences between the other two factors and total score averages.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lack of motivation is a common phenomenon in treatment of schizophrenia. Despite information that various psychosocial approaches may help overcome lack of motivation, their content and nature remain uncertain. However, in recent years, there is an increasing interest in psychosocial interventions such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and motivational interviewing (MI) techniques in approaching individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (IDSs). In this study, the therapeutic models of ACT and MI were combined to create an innovative integrative approach to address the problem of lack of motivation in IDSs. AIMS: This study was conducted to determine how a counseling program based on ACT and supported with MI affected the perceptions of treatment motivation in IDSs. METHOD: This study addressed the qualitative aspects of a doctoral dissertation designed as a quasi-experimental study that gathered both quantitative and qualitative data. RESULTS: As a result of the content analysis, three main themes and 10 categories that motivated IDSs for compliance with regular treatment were developed. The participants in the experimental group expressed a focused treatment motivation to participate in daily life activities and social relations, acceptance of illness, satisfaction with life despite side effects and leading a value-oriented life in comparison with the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Counseling based on ACT and supported with the MI technique is effective in improving treatment motivation in IDSs. This counseling may be implemented as an effective psychiatric nursing intervention for IDSs.

RESUMO

The current descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the correlation between perceived social support and hopelessness of 609 Syrian refugees age ≥16 residing in Gaziantep City, Turkey. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and Beck Hopelessness Scale were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and regression and correlation analyses were used to analyze the data. Syrian refugees had high levels of hopelessness, particularly motivation loss, and moderate levels of perceived social support. As perceived social support increased, hopelessness, feelings, expectations about the future, and motivation loss decreased. In accordance with these results, hopes of Syrian refugees for the future can be increased by improving their social support system. RESUMO

AIM: This study was planned to assess the levels of fatigue and social support in patients with diabetes and to determine the relationship between fatigue and social support in these patients. METHODS: A descriptive design was used in this research. The study was conducted between March and June 2013 with 300 sampled patients from 1657 studied participants with type 2 diabetes who presented to the diabetes polyclinics of Malatya State Hospital and Inonu University, Turgut Ozal Medical Center. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the Fatigue Severity Scale were used in the study. RESULTS: When the correlation analysis carried out between fatigue severity and social support in patients with diabetes was examined, a significant relationship was found in the negative direction between fatigue severity and family support (r = -0.145, P < 0.05) as well as overall support (r = -0.132, P < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the Fatigue Severity Scale score and sex, education status, occupation, cohabitation, presence of complications, and hemoglobin A1c (P < 0.05). Family support was significant only with respect to marital status, occupation, and being employed (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: It was seen at the end of this research that social support reduced the level of fatigue in a number of patients with type 2 diabetes. Nurses of diabetes patients should carry out fatigue assessments routinely and reflect these in nursing care plans by also associating them with the social support sources of the patient.

RESUMO

This study was planned and conducted for the purpose of examining the relationship between depression and loneliness in elderly people and the influencing factors. The study was a descriptive and correlational study and its population consisted of 17,080 older individuals aged sixty and over who were registered at six Family Healthcare Centers (FHCs) located in the provisional center of Malatya. The sample of the study comprised of 913 elderly people who were chosen from the elderly people registered at the FHCs first by cluster sampling and then by simple random sampling from the clusters in proportion to the population. The data was collected between April and June 2011 using a questionnaire developed by the investigators in line with the literature, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS). They had a mean score of 13.83 ± 7.4 from the GDS and 40.50 ± 12.1 from the ULS. A positive correlation was found between Geriatric Depression and loneliness (r=0.608, p<0.001). It was observed that there was a significant correlation between loneliness and depression in the elderly people living in a community, presence of social security and higher income, on the other hand, led to lower mean scores. In view of these results, it can be advised that a minimum income should be secured for elderly people whether they have social security or not, their families and the society should be trained not to leave elderly people alone.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of an educational intervention on the incidence of stage II pressure ulcers (PUs) in adult patients in intensive care units (ICUs) in a Turkish medical center. DESIGN: This was a prospective study of patients admitted to ICUs. Data were collected over a 3-month period. Subjects were assessed using the Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Sore Risk to determine the risk for developing a PU; assessment was completed within the first 24 hours of admission and each 48 hours thereafter for a maximum of 12 weeks. Educational intervention was employed: Intervention included education of ICU nurses about PU prevention and risk assessment; and following the educational intervention and implementation of the PU prevention protocol in all ICUs, data were collected for study period II. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 186 patients admitted to critical care units of a Turkish medical center. Ninety-three subjects participated in a preintervention comparison group, and 93 subjects participated in an intervention group. INSTRUMENTS: Data were collected using a demographic and clinical data form, a nursing intervention checklist, and the Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Sore Risk. RESULTS: Stage II PUs were observed in a total of 50 patients for the overall sample. The most common site was the sacrococcygeal area, which accounted for 46% of ulcers. A statistically significant difference was observed when the rate of stage II PUs in the comparison group, 37% (34 of 93 patients), was compared to the rate in the intervention group, 17% (16 of 93 patients) (chi2 = 8.86, df = 1, P < .01). CONCLUSION: Education regarding preventive care can be effective in reducing the incidence of PUs in the ICU setting. Therefore, education about risk assessment and PU prevention should be a priority for nurses in critical care settings.
